Pope Discharged from Hospital After Successful 9-Day Operation

Pope Francis, the 86-year-old pontiff, has been discharged from the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome after undergoing abdominal surgery to repair a hernia and remove painful scarring. His surgeon, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, stated that the pope is now in a better condition than before the procedure. Francis left the hospital in a wheelchair, expressing gratitude to the well-wishers, and then stood up to board a small Vatican car waiting for him. Despite reporters thrusting microphones at him, the pope playfully batted them away.

Dr. Alfieri shared that the pope is in good health and will be a strong leader moving forward. Before returning to the Vatican, Francis took a moment to pray for 10 minutes in front of an icon of the Virgin Mary at St. Mary Major Basilica. It has become a customary practice for him to visit the basilica and express his gratitude after returning from trips abroad. Notably, after his discharge from the hospital in April for bronchitis treatment, he also made a stop there to pray. Francis remained in his wheelchair while praying. He has upcoming engagements with the presidents of Cuba and Brazil next week, and is scheduled for a visit to Portugal in August and a historic trip to Mongolia at the end of August.
