Bus full of seniors headed to casino crashes with truck in Canada, at least 15 people dead

June 15 (UPI) — Officials in Canada have reported a devastating accident involving a bus full of seniors on their way to a casino. The collision with a semi-truck resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the tragedy occurred when the bus was traveling southbound on Highway 5 and was struck by the truck as it crossed the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway around 11:40 a.m. The right of way is yet to be determined.

The RCMP confirmed that 15 people lost their lives in the accident, and 10 others were taken to a local hospital with various injuries. To offer support, a family support center has been established in a church basement in Dauphin, Manitoba, where the seniors were originally from.

Rob Hill, the commanding officer for the RCMP in Manitoba, expressed his condolences and stated, “Sadly, this is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as one of tragedy and incredible sadness.” He emphasized the difficulty faced by families waiting for news, and apologized for the lack of quick and definitive answers.

The Sand Hills Casino in Carberry, which was the intended destination of the seniors, expressed their condolences to the affected families and pledged to provide support in any way they can.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also shared his sympathy, calling the incident “incredibly tragic” and offering his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He assured them that Canadians stand with them during this difficult time.
