Since the beginning of November, eight endangered native wolves have met their untimely demise, with three fresh kills surfacing in the past week alone.
In what appears to be a politically motivated act, the unidentified vigilante(s) have chosen to showcase the mutilated corpses in prominent locations, such as village squares and even on the steps of a theater.
All but one of the protected animals were executed with firearms, while the remaining victim was strangled. These killings are believed to be the result of an exasperated sheep farmer seeking revenge for attacks on their livestock.
Vet Marco Aloisi, director of a local wildlife recovery center, has suggested that publicly displaying the wolves’ bodies seems to be a form of “protest.”
Wolves were reintroduced to Tuscany in the 1990s with the help of EU funding, following their extinction in the UK during the 17th century. This reintroduction project mirrors the endeavors of MFI furniture millionaire Paul Lister, who aims to reintroduce wolves to his Alladale estate in Scotland.
Italy’s wolf population has been steadily increasing, as illegal hunting by farmers has declined. Tuscany now boasts an estimated population of 230 wolves.
Typically, wolf packs inhabit the high Apennine mountains but migrate to farmland during harsh weather conditions or when prey is scarce.
In recent years, these packs have ventured to lower altitudes than ever before, resulting in approximately 1,000 attacks on sheep, cattle, and horses in 2012, according to official figures.
These marauding attacks have reached new heights in the coastal Maremma district, causing a significant decline in livestock herds.
