Leading the pack was Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who regained his title as the world’s richest man, surpassing Mexican Carlos Slim. Gates’ fortune increased by $15.8 billion to reach $78.5 billion, mainly due to the rise in Microsoft shares. The technology sector experienced the biggest gains, with a 28% increase in wealth. Only 70 out of the 300 wealthiest individuals experienced a net loss during the year. The surge in global stocks in 2013 resulted in the best annual gain since 2009, with the MSCI World Index advancing 24% and the S&P 500 Index rising 30%.
