In a tragic incident, 32 individuals lost their lives off the coast of southern Greece when a fishing boat carrying migrants capsized and sank. The authorities reported this devastating news on Wednesday.
To rescue the survivors, an extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched in the area.
So far, authorities have successfully rescued 104 people from the incident, which took place at night, approximately 75 kilometers southwest of Greece’s southern Peloponnese region.
Four of the survivors have been hospitalized due to symptoms of hypothermia.
Although the Greek coast guard has recovered 32 bodies, it remains uncertain how many passengers are still missing at sea.
A collaborative search effort involving six coast guard vessels, a navy frigate, a military transport plane, an air force helicopter, several private vessels, and a drone from the European Union border protection agency, Frontex, is currently ongoing.
The boat, headed for Italy, is believed to have departed from the Tobruk area in eastern Libya. The Italian coast guard initially informed Greek authorities and Frontex about the approaching vessel on Tuesday.
Smugglers are adopting larger boats and venturing into international waters off the Greek mainland to evade local coast guard patrols.
In another incident on Wednesday, a yacht carrying 81 migrants sent out a distress call and was subsequently towed to a port on the south coast of Crete, a Greek island.
