In a heartbreaking tale, tens of thousands of Indian women have fallen victim to fraudulent marriages. These women marry Indian men working abroad, hoping for a better life in countries like Australia and Canada. However, their dreams are shattered as their husbands abandon them and return overseas. Struggling with the local social customs, many women are forced to live with their in-laws for years without ever seeing their husbands again. To make matters worse, their dowries disappear along with the men, and some endure physical abuse from their in-laws for failing to provide additional funds for their overseas husbands.
A retired judge heading a commission investigating this issue in Punjab perfectly summed it up, stating, “The boys come, they enjoy, and leave with the dowry money. Then they get married again in foreign countries for citizenship. It is just treachery.” Unfortunately, legal recourse is limited for these women, although a petition has been filed with the nation’s Supreme Court to address this. One option available to them is to seek the revocation of their husbands’ passports.
According to a 2019 article by Reuters, a group of women managed to have over 400 passports suspended and another 67 revoked within an 18-month period. However, criticizing Indians living abroad, known as non-resident Indians or NRIs, is challenging due to the significant amount of money they send back to India. In fact, their remittances surpass those of any other country, reaching an estimated $100 billion in 2022, as reported by the BBC. (Read more India stories.)
