Former US President Donald Trump has been indicted on 37 counts related to mishandling classified documents. The charges include obstruction of justice, making false statements, and retaining classified information. The indictment alleges that Trump illegally kept sensitive documents on topics such as US nuclear programs, vulnerabilities to military attacks, and potential plans for retaliation. Other charges include Trump sharing a secret “plan of attack” against Iran to visitors at his golf club in New Jersey and sharing a classified military map with a staffer on his political action committee. The indictment also alleges that Trump stored classified documents in inappropriate locations, including the bathroom and shower at his Florida estate Mar-a-Lago, as well as a ballroom, storeroom, office, and bedroom. The prosecution noted that tens of thousands of members and guests visited the active social club Mar-a-Lago between the end of Trump’s presidency in January 2021 through the August 2022 search. The indictment includes photographs of boxes stacked in rows on the ballroom’s stage and documents marked “SECRET/REL TO USA, FVEY”. Trump’s attorney identified 38 classified documents and placed them in a folder that he sealed with clear duct tape handed to him by Trump valet Walt Nauta. The valet then took the attorney to meet the former president. The indictment further alleges that Nauta moved approximately 64 boxes of documents from the Mar-a-Lago storage room to Trump’s residence. Nauta’s actions occurred between May 23, 2022, and June 2, 2022, according to the indictment.
