How to address the significant gender pension gap? | Pensions

The article highlighting the significant disparity in private pension savings between men and women is a much-needed contribution to the discourse surrounding the “great gender pension chasm”. This issue has long been a concern, and its persistent impact on women’s retirement prospects is unsettling.

The recent gender pension report from the Department for Work and Pensions further underscores the critical need to revamp our system and raise awareness of the gender pension gap. Shockingly, 1.4 million women in the UK earn under £100 a week through state pensions, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to men in saving for retirement.

Ethnic minority women are disproportionately affected by this issue, with 54% of Black women having no retirement savings at all. This group, along with Pakistani and Bangladeshi women, face some of the highest rates of unemployment in the UK, only to then face the gender pay gap upon securing employment.

It is imperative that immediate action is taken to ensure that women’s pensions, especially those from ethnic minorities, are not unfairly impacted by low earnings or a lack of financial education and support. The government must remove the pension eligibility threshold that disproportionately affects women and implement educational programs that bridge the gender pension gap.

As the Head of Policy, Pensions and Investments at Scottish Widows, I urge the government to make this a priority, as it is crucial for promoting gender equality in the UK.
