Here’s what you should know about the harmful health consequences of exercising in poor air quality.

As Global Running Day approaches, the northeastern regions of the U.S. and Canada are experiencing some of the worst air quality in recent memory. The wildfire smoke has reached “unhealthy” levels according to national and global standards. This leaves many wondering whether it is safe to exercise outdoors. A 2021 study published in the European Heart Journal indicates that in highly polluted air, exercise can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Local officials are urging residents to avoid going outside as much as possible, especially vulnerable populations. Even the New York Road Runners, the nonprofit responsible for organizing the annual TCS New York City Marathon, has canceled its Global Running Day events in smoke-impacted areas.

IQAir, a company that tracks air quality data in cities globally, warns that even moderate amounts of pollution can impact one’s ability to breathe outdoors. At “unhealthy” levels and above, outdoor exercise is no longer encouraged. The best time to exercise outdoors is when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is between 0 and 50. AQI levels from 51 to 100 are mostly acceptable, but chronic health conditions can make pollution dangerous.

If you choose to engage in outdoor exercise, the American Lung Association recommends finding areas with less pollution, such as nature trails, and avoiding busy traffic times. Opting for lower-intensity workouts can also help decrease the amount of unhealthy air inhaled. It’s crucial to stay safe during poor air quality by making physical activity less intense and shortening the duration of workouts. People with asthma should keep their inhalers with them at all times during times of poor air quality.
