A groundbreaking study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood has reported that there is a correlation between the length of time a baby is breastfed and their academic performance as adolescents. Conducted by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford, the study followed 5,000 British children from when they were babies in the early 2000s to high school. The researchers found that those who were breastfed for over a year were 39% more likely to score highly in both math and English GCSE exams compared to those who were not breastfed. Furthermore, children who were breastfed for longer durations had also shown modest improvement in test scores. Even those who were breastfed for at least four months had a higher attainment score compared to those who were never breastfed. The study concluded that breastfeeding should continue to be encouraged and that potential improvements in academic achievement were only one of its benefits. Previous research has linked breastfeeding to various cognitive and health benefits, including better scores in verbal and spatial relations skills and healthier blood pressure and heart health in children and mothers. It should be noted that while breastfeeding is encouraged, it is not necessary for every family to do so, and those who choose not to should not feel guilty.
