A 98-year-old man in Germany has been charged with being an accessory to murder at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp during World War II, according to prosecutors. This German citizen, residing in Main-Kinzig County near Frankfurt, allegedly supported the cruel and malicious killing of thousands of prisoners as a member of the SS guard. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, is facing more than 3,300 counts of being an accessory to murder between 1943-1945.
The indictment has been filed at the state court in Hanau, which will determine if the case should go to trial. If so, he will be tried under juvenile law, considering his age during the alleged crimes. Last October, a psychiatric expert deemed the suspect fit for trial, at least to a limited extent. German prosecutors have pursued similar cases in recent years, where individuals who aided in the functioning of a Nazi camp are prosecuted as accessories to the murders, even without direct evidence of their participation in a specific killing.
Under German law, charges of murder and being an accessory to murder do not have a statute of limitations. Sachsenhausen held over 200,000 individuals between 1936 and 1945, with tens of thousands dying from starvation, disease, forced labor, and other causes. The camp was also notorious for medical experiments and systematic SS extermination operations, including shootings, hangings, and gassing. While exact death tolls vary, scholars estimate that around 40,000 to 50,000 individuals were killed, although higher figures of up to 100,000 have been suggested.
