97-year-old Carol Duvall, a prominent figure in crafting

Carol Duvall, the renowned “Queen of Crafts” and beloved star of ABC and HGTV, has sadly passed away at the age of 97. Duvall died in Traverse City, Michigan on July 31, as confirmed by her family to the New York Times. She will always be remembered as the host of “The Carol Duvall Show,” which aired on HGTV from 1994 to 2005 before moving to the former DIY network from 2005 to 2009.

The news of Duvall’s passing was met with an outpouring of love and admiration on social media. HGTV paid tribute to her on August 3 by sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing their condolences to her family. Maureen McCormick, star of “The Brady Bunch” and a guest on various HGTV programs, also took to social media to express her love for the craft icon and extend her deepest sympathies to Duvall’s family.

Cam Frierson, a producer who worked on “The Carol Duvall Show,” shared a touching post on Facebook, emphasizing that there will never be another “Queen of Crafts” like Miss Carol. Frierson, who has firsthand experience of Duvall’s impact, highlighted the inspiration she provided to both guests and audience members, as well as the dedicated crew who worked tirelessly to bring entertaining and informative content to HGTV. Frierson also shared a statement from Duvall’s grandson, describing her as an amazing person who led a fulfilling life surrounded by loved ones. Her legacy as a pioneer in her field will be greatly missed.

Duvall’s career began in 1951 on children’s TV in Michigan before making her way to Detroit’s WWJ-TV, where she spent 18 years working as an anchor and producer. It was during this time that she embarked on her own crafting show, “Here’s Carol Duvall.” This local success led to her national series, “The Home Show,” which aired on ABC from 1988 to 1994, ultimately paving the way for her successful venture on HGTV. In addition to her television career, Duvall also authored two books, 1972’s “Wanna Make Something Out of It?” and 2007’s “Paper Crafting With Carol Duvall.”

Reflecting on her extraordinary career in 1999, Duvall humbly acknowledged the overwhelming response she received for her craftiness on television, despite feeling uncertain in the early stages. She proudly declared, “I’m a television person who got into crafting, not a crafter who got on television.” Her passion for crafts became a lifelong focus for her, and in her retirement years in 2017, she expressed a sense of nostalgia for not having a platform to share great craft ideas that came her way. She truly left an indelible mark on the world of crafts and television.
