90-Year-Old Great-Grandfather from California Defies Age as the World’s Oldest Bodybuilder, Continues to Win Strength Competitions While Lifting 250lbs

Meet Jim Arrington, the world’s oldest bodybuilder who is about to turn 91 next month. Jim has been working out for over 70 years and credits his passion for muscle-building with keeping him in great health and enabling him to maintain an active lifestyle. In fact, he can lift more than his own bodyweight!

Jim was given the title of the oldest bodybuilder in the world when he was 83 and has held onto it ever since. He proudly describes himself as a “gym rat” and firmly believes that his workout routine has contributed to his longevity. He can do everything that someone much younger can do, and he feels grateful to be able to walk with longer strides due to reduced joint inflammation from exercising.

Jim’s love affair with bodybuilding began when he was just 15 years old and decided to pursue it as a means to overcome his asthma. He started with 3lb balls and quickly saw improvements in his health as well as significant muscle gain. Throughout his life, he has followed a regular workout schedule, going to the gym three times a week for about two hours each day.

Currently living in Los Angeles, California, Jim lifts up to 250lbs with his legs, which is 1.5 times his bodyweight. When it comes to his arms, he can bicep curl up to 100lbs, and during chest and back exercises, he can lift weights as heavy as 140lbs. Jim is always striving to improve and recently increased his stationary bike routine from five to ten minutes at level 11 in just five months.

For Jim, Mondays are dedicated to his back and chest, Wednesdays focus on his legs, and Fridays are all about his shoulders and arms. He prefers using machines for his exercises, as his aging joints are not as strong as they used to be, and he wants to avoid unnecessary strain. His workout begins with warming up by lifting 40lbs for 20 repetitions, gradually increasing the weight until he reaches his maximum. Jim pushes himself to the limit, which leaves him breathless and barely able to walk.

Despite his age, Jim is still competing and winning bodybuilding competitions. His latest victory was in the over-80s category at the IFBB Professional League championships held in Reno, Nevada. He is now preparing for the Pro Masters World Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and has convinced the organizers to include an over-90s category just for him.

Jim is incredibly proud of his World’s Oldest Bodybuilder title from Guinness World Records. Throughout his journey, he learned the importance of nutrition to support his rigorous exercise routine. He initially focused on milk and beef for muscle gain but switched to a diet filled with greens and whole foods to combat inflammation.

Jim’s dedication to fitness not only keeps him healthy but also allows him to take care of his 84-year-old wife, May, who has dementia. They have been married for over 40 years and have four children and nine great-grandchildren. Jim’s ultimate goal is to inspire and encourage others, particularly older adults, to start weightlifting and enjoy the benefits of a strong and active lifestyle.
