76ers’ Kelly Oubre out with broken rib following hit-and-run incident

Philadelphia 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. had a setback on Sunday after being involved in a hit-and-run in the heart of Philadelphia, leaving him injured and sidelined, according to authorities and 76ers officials.

The incident occurred on Saturday around 7 p.m. as Oubre was walking in his neighborhood, Center City, near Broad and Locust streets, just a few blocks south of City Hall, Philadelphia police stated in a release.

After being struck by a vehicle, Oubre was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and was reported to have suffered a broken rib, as well as injuries to his hip and leg, before being released several hours later, according to NBC Philadelphia.

The 27-year-old forward was expected to attend the 76ers’ practice as an observer on Tuesday, with head coach Nick Nurse indicating that the team would assess his recovery timeline during a news conference prior to the practice.

Although the team did not consider his injuries as season-ending, no arrests regarding the incident had been made, and authorities were still working to identify the driver involved in the hit-and-run, according to NBC Sports.

Oubre’s journey to the NBA began in New Orleans, and he later moved to the Houston area following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as outlined in his NBA bio.

During his college career, Oubre played for the Kansas Jayhawks before being drafted as the 15th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in 2015. He has since played for multiple teams, with the Sixers being the most successful fit so far. Oubre currently averages 16 points per game for the 7-1 Sixers, showcasing a promising season before the setback, as noted by Coach Nurse.

Describing Oubre as “a guy who needed a break, was getting one, and he did everything he could to give himself a break,” Nurse expressed disappointment over the situation, stating, “That’s kind of a bummer.”
