7 Common Flight Habits Passengers Should Avoid: Insights from Skyscanner Survey

  • A recent survey conducted by Skyscanner revealed the top pet peeves of American passengers while flying.
  • One common annoyance reported by respondents was when other passengers recline their seats.
  • Grooming in-flight and not using headphones were identified as the worst behaviors exhibited by fellow passengers.

The summer of 2023 was a whirlwind of travel disruptions.

In August alone, Hurricane Idalia caused the cancellation of over 1,000 flights. However, it wasn’t just natural disasters causing chaos; unruly passengers and crew members also played a role.

Kathleen Bangs, a former commercial pilot and spokesperson for the flight-tracking website FlightAware, stated that flight cancellations were also a result of a shortage of pilots, air-traffic controllers, and airplane mechanics. “We do not have enough personnel to fully manage the airspace and maintain the required level of flight safety. Therefore, flight reductions are inevitable,” she explained.

Despite the chaos, many travelers already find air travel uncomfortable and aggravating.

Skyscanner, a travel search engine company, commissioned a survey to determine the most irritating behaviors exhibited by passengers during flights. The survey, conducted by market research company OnePoll from September 27 to October 2, gathered responses from 2,000 leisure travelers in the United States within the past three years. Here are seven of the most irritating things passengers do on flights, according to Skyscanner’s survey.
