6 Infants Affected by Salmonella Outbreak from Dog and Cat Food Connection

Mid America Pet Food, a Texas-based pet food manufacturer, has significantly expanded its recall to include numerous dry dog and cat food varieties that may be contaminated with salmonella. This move comes after at least seven people, including six infants, have fallen ill from the potential contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are actively investigating this outbreak, which was announced on Thursday. Mid America Pet Food has announced a recall of all pet food brands produced at its plant in Mount Pleasant, Texas. This action includes 35 different products with best by dates prior to October 31, 2024. Some of the recalled brands include Victor super Premium Dog Foods, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and certain Member’s Mark varieties distributed nationwide.

This recall builds on two previous recalls from September, both prompted by the discovery of salmonella from random sampling. The latest recall update highlights that seven individuals have been infected with salmonella as of November 1, 2023.

The CDC has confirmed seven illnesses, including one hospitalization, which have been reported in seven states: Alabama, California, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Minnesota, and Oklahoma. According to the agency, the actual number of affected individuals is likely much higher. In this case, it is suspected that people were affected by coming into contact with the contaminated pet food or items used with it.

Salmonella bacteria cause an estimated 1.3 million infections in the U.S. each year, impacting both humans and their pets. Symptoms can range from lethargy and diarrhea in pets to more serious symptoms for humans. The FDA advises safely disposing of the recalled pet food and washing any related items thoroughly to avoid further contamination.
