59 Homeless Individuals Relocated Indoors Through LA County Program Tackling Encampments

In a significant operation organized under the Pathway Home program, nearly 60 individuals living in homeless encampments or RVs in the Lennox, Hawthorne, and Inglewood areas have been relocated to temporary housing, as announced by Los Angeles County officials on Wednesday. The Pathway Home program, similar to Mayor Karen Bass’ Inside Safe initiative, aims to address the issue of homelessness by targeting encampments, including recreational vehicles, and providing alternative housing solutions.

According to the county, the first operation of the Pathway Home program took place from August 9-11 and focused on a cluster of encampments near the San Diego (405) Freeway in the vicinity of Los Angeles International Airport. A total of 59 individuals were transitioned indoors, with 50 being accommodated in a hotel operated by Pathway Home and nine others placed in interim housing.

The duration of the provided housing for these individuals has not been determined yet. However, county officials assure that the program offers comprehensive services to support them in achieving stability and ultimately securing permanent housing. These services include physical and mental healthcare, substance abuse disorder treatment, benefits enrollment, and life skills development. Moreover, the program provides “housing navigation” assistance to help individuals obtain leases and offers time-limited subsidies to assist with rental payments.

In addition to facilitating housing for the homeless, the Pathway Home initiative has also successfully found homes for 26 pets. Furthermore, the program included the removal of seven RVs being used as housing and the clearing of tents and debris from the various encampments.

“Pathway Home is a critical mobilization effort that demonstrates a collaborative approach to expand and accelerate proven solutions for reducing unsheltered homelessness,” stated Cheri Todoroff, the Director of the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative.
