57-Year-Old Drummer of Iconic Pulp Fiction Song Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Rowan, the drummer of Urge Overkill, at the age of 57. The news was confirmed by the band on Instagram, where they expressed their sorrow over the loss of their drummer, also known as Blackie Onassis. The Los Angeles Times also reported Rowan’s death, although the cause was not disclosed.

Urge Overkill, hailing from Chicago in the mid-’80s, rose to fame with hits like “Sister Havana,” “The Break,” and “Positive Bleeding.” However, it was their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” in the movie Pulp Fiction that propelled them into the mainstream. The iconic scene of Uma Thurman dancing to the song in the film is etched into pop culture history. Rowan joined the band for their third album, The Supersonic Storybook, released in 1991.

In a 1992 interview with Spin, Rowan described Urge Overkill as a resurrection of the swinging ’60s era, influenced by the likes of Neil Diamond and Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan. Rowan departed from the band in 1996, shortly after the release of their album Exit the Dragon. He faced legal troubles and was arrested for heroin possession, although the charges were eventually dropped. After leaving the band, Rowan lost contact with his former bandmates.
