5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Oktoberfest: Break Out the Beer Steins and Lederhosen

The beer is flowing and millions of people are descending on the Bavarian capital to celebrate the official opening of Oktoberfest. Mayor Dieter Reiter inserted the tap in the first keg at noon on Saturday, marking the start of the 18-day festivities. In a traditional cry of “O’zapft is!” which means “It’s tapped!” in German, the atmosphere is electric. Partygoers adorned in lederhosen and dirndl dresses flock to Munich’s festival grounds, eager to get their hands on the first 2-pint mug of beer.

Just moments before the first keg was tapped, Bavarian Gov. Markus Soeder addressed the enthusiastic crowd, asking if they were ready for Oktoberfest to begin. He exclaimed, “I can only say one thing: This is the most beautiful, biggest, most important festival in the world.” After a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Oktoberfest returns in 2022 with great fanfare. The price of a 2-pint mug this year is between $13.45 and $15.90, reflecting a 6% increase from 2022. Celebrating its 188th edition, this year’s Oktoberfest will run until Oct. 3.
