27 Years Later: The Untold Truth Behind Tupac Shakur’s Killing & Prosecution

Updated with details on the indictment. A breakthrough has finally been made in the long-standing investigation into the fatal drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, one of the last living witnesses, was charged with murder on Friday. The Nevada grand jury indicted Davis on one count of murder with a deadly weapon after months of evidence. According to Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo, Davis has admitted in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the Cadillac from which the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 incident, as reported by the AP.

Davis, described by DiGiacomo as the “on-ground, on-site commander,” allegedly ordered the death of Shakur, who was 25 at the time. The charges were announced shortly after Davis, now 60, was arrested near his home in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas. Police had previously raided his home in July, collecting items related to the murder, including computers, a cellphone, a hard drive, a copy of Vibe magazine featuring Shakur, .40-caliber bullets, photographs, and his memoir.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating, “It has often been said that justice delayed is justice denied. In this case, justice has been delayed, but justice won’t be denied.” Shakur was shot multiple times while sitting in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight. The incident occurred when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip. Shakur passed away a week later from his injuries.

This shooting took place during a feud between Shakur and his rap rival, Biggie Smalls, also known as the Notorious B.I.G. Biggie Smalls was fatally shot in March 1997. At the time, both artists were at the center of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry that dominated the hip-hop scene in the mid-1990s. Shakur’s death occurred while his fourth solo album, “All Eyez on Me,” was still on the charts, having sold 5 million copies. Widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time, Shakur was nominated for six Grammy Awards.
