24-Hour ‘Field Day’ Organized by Amateur Radio Enthusiasts

Amateur radio enthusiasts are set to showcase their skills at an Eastvale park this weekend. Over a 24-hour period, they will use their personalized radio sets to send messages, demonstrating the importance of nontraditional communication during emergencies. The Local Ham Radio Club of Eastvale will be one of approximately 40,000 participants taking part in the American Radio Relay League’s annual “Field Day” event, happening from Saturday morning to Sunday evening.

The club will set up at the north end of Cedar Creek Park, allowing the public to observe their operations between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.

During Field Day, amateur radio operators, also known as “ham” operators, establish temporary broadcasting stations in various locations such as homes, parks, and schools. They communicate with each other using antennas and have special access to multiple frequencies across the radio spectrum. This event serves as an opportunity for them to hone their wireless communication skills and provide a valuable backup communication resource for communities and the nation.

The ARRL, based in Newington, Connecticut, views ham radios as a reliable means of connectivity when modern devices are unavailable or ineffective. Their use has been instrumental in transmitting critical information to the public during emergencies like wildfires, tornadoes, and hurricanes. With over 725,000 “hams” across North America ranging in age from 5 to 100, their contribution to emergency response efforts is significant.

Ham radios operate on high-frequency channels not commonly found on commercial receivers, providing a unique communication capability. The Corona Police Department recognizes the importance of ham operators and has a team of Communications Specialist Volunteers that have been standby facilitators for many years.
