July 27 (UPI) — A bipartisan coalition of nearly two dozen attorneys general, led by California’s Rob Bonta, is opposing a multi-billion-dollar settlement reached by 3M to end lawsuits alleging the contamination of drinking water with “forever chemicals.” These chemicals, known as PFAS, are linked to various cancers and are found in everyday products. The settlement, valued at $10.3 billion, was negotiated between 3M and public water suppliers nationwide. It is currently pending court approval.

The attorneys general argue that individual water providers would be bound by the settlement, regardless of whether they have sued 3M or not. They claim that the agreement places the burden on utilities, shifting liabilities away from the company. The documents also highlight concerns about the amount of payout received by the water providers, as well as an indemnification clause that could leave the providers vulnerable to compensation claims from 3M. The attorneys general are urging the court to deny the settlement or modify its terms to address these concerns.
