2028 Olympics: Development of a Long-Term Plan to Send Filipino Wrestlers

Filipino freestyle wrestler Jiah Pingot, known for her impressive performance at the Hanoi Southeast Asian Games, is set to receive continued support from Go For Gold Philippines. The national wrestling team was previously provided with fighting shoes during the Cambodia Southeast Asian Games, showcasing Go For Gold’s commitment to helping Filipino wrestlers compete on the world stage, particularly in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

National wrestling coach Efrelyn Calitis-Crosby expressed their plan to create a program specifically aimed at qualifying athletes for the 2028 Olympics. Go For Gold PH founder, Jeremy Go, has pledged his support until the athletes reach Los Angeles. This comprehensive five-year plan is a welcomed proposal as it has been a long time since a Filipino wrestler participated in the Olympics.

Jiah Pingot has emerged as a strong contender to join the elite group, having consistently won silver medals in the past three SEA Games. Another promising wrestler is 16-year-old Uzziah Asher Gulay from Sta. Rosa, Laguna, who has already displayed impressive skills and achievements in both local and international competitions.

The goal of Go For Gold Philippines is to bring honor to the country through wrestling, aiming for nothing less than a gold medal in the 2028 Olympics. They have laid out a five-year roadmap to elevate Filipino wrestlers to the highest level.

Coach Calitis-Crosby mentioned that discussions will be held with Jeremy Go to determine which athletes will receive support once the program is fully developed. The national wrestling team has consistently received support from Go For Gold, starting from the 2019 Philippine SEA Games where they provided singlets and living quarters.

Aside from wrestling, Go For Gold’s program has also supported athletes in various sports such as cycling, triathlon, sepak takraw, dragonboat, skateboarding, chess, basketball, and volleyball.

The Philippine wrestling team’s long wait for another representative in the Olympics is expected to be broken with the implementation of this five-year plan. The objective is to have a Filipino grappler compete at the grandest sports spectacle in the world, the LA 2028 Olympics.
