2024 Aspiring Billionaire: Contribute $1, Receive $20

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has come up with a unique and daring fundraising strategy to secure a spot on the GOP debate stage next month. According to Politico, Burgum is offering a $20 gift card to anyone who donates as little as $1 to his presidential campaign. To qualify under RNC rules, Burgum needs 40,000 donors, and he is willing to spend up to $950,000 on gift cards to attract up to 50,000 donors.

This fundraising tactic has raised eyebrows among political and legal experts. Some believe Burgum is using these donors as “straw donors” to give the appearance of a large campaign donor base, reimbursing them with his own money. However, the cost of the gift cards may not be a concern for Burgum, who is estimated to have a net worth of over $1 billion. His campaign has positioned this strategy as a way to help people affected by the current state of the economy, which he refers to as “Bidenflation,” until he is elected president to address the economic issues.

Burgum is not the only GOP candidate experimenting with unconventional ways to attract donors. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy recently launched a fundraising program called Vivek Kitchen Cabinet, where individuals who pass a background check can fundraise for his campaign and earn a 10% commission on the total funds. Despite hitting the 40,000-donor threshold, Ramaswamy’s decision was influenced by uncertainties surrounding future debate thresholds and expenses, as reported by ABC News.
