20 Years of the Best Northern Lights Displays Predicted by Scientists in Europe This Winter

Get ready for a spectacular Northern Lights show this winter! Astronomers predict that the next few months will be the best time in two decades to see the stunning natural phenomenon. Already, the Northern Lights have made a rare appearance in southern England, marking the start of an incredible show.

The sun is entering its peak of activity, known as the “solar maximum,” which occurs approximately every 11 years. The period between January and October 2024 is expected to bring an increase in aurora displays, not only in the usual polar regions but also in Europe.

This upcoming solar maximum is generating a buzz of excitement, especially after the weak solar maximum in April 2014. Expert space physicist Njål Gulbrandsen from the University of Norway (UiT) anticipates a surge in auroral activity, thanks to the heightened solar storms.

The recent sighting of the Northern Lights in the UK and Ireland confirms this, with the phenomenon reaching as far south as Stonehenge.

According to Gulbrandsen, the current solar cycle, combined with the effects of the previously weak cycle, could result in the most intense activity in 20 years. This increase in intensity means that the aurora will be visible further south than usual, even in parts of Europe.

While traditional Northern Lights destinations like northern Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland remain ideal, the expanded auroral oval will allow for captivating displays across Europe, creating excitement among experts like Katie Herlingshaw from the University Centre in Svalbard (Unis).

Herlingshaw, who is studying a new type of aurora called “fragments,” emphasizes the importance of finding dark, remote locations to witness the breathtaking phenomenon. She advises that individuals seeking the best views should venture outside city lights.

This article was amended on 7 November 2023. An earlier version said that the last solar maximum was in December 2019 but that should have said April 2014. December 2019 was the most recent solar minimum.
