1975 Japan Air Lines Flight: Shocking Incident of 197 People Suffering from Mass Food Poisoning Revealed

  • It may seem like there’s been an increase in unpleasant flight experiences, but these incidents are not new.
  • During the summer, passengers were shocked to find blood, feces, and vomit on planes.
  • However, back in 1975, 197 people on a flight experienced mass food poisoning.

In-flight disasters are making headlines these days as travel resumes after the pandemic.

Recently, there have been reports of Air France passengers finding blood and feces on the floor, Air Canada passengers discovering vomit on their seats, and one unfortunate man being exposed to another passenger’s smelly feet.

A notable incident that went viral is the “diarrhea flight,” where a Delta plane had to turn back due to a sick passenger spreading illness throughout the cabin.

However, unpleasant incidents during flights are not new. They have been a risk for air travelers for many years.

One of the worst incidents occurred in 1975 when nearly 200 people aboard a Japan Air Lines flight fell severely ill from mass food poisoning.

According to a 1975 study in the medical journal The Lancet, more than half of the passengers on a flight from Anchorage, Alaska, to Copenhagen, Denmark experienced gastrointestinal illness symptoms after consuming a ham and omelet breakfast served onboard. The illness was caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which spread via a cook’s blistered fingers as he prepared the food.

Out of the 197 affected passengers, 144 had to be hospitalized upon landing.

The incident was attributed to a catering company partly owned by Japan Air Lines, and as a result, the medical journal recommended that cockpit members avoid eating the same meals to prevent an entire flight crew from falling ill.

Tragically, the executive of the catering company died by suicide a few days after the incident.

The infamous nightmare flight serves as a reminder that disgusting in-flight experiences can happen in any era.
