Actor Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the grandson of Robert De Niro, tragically passed away at the age of 19, as announced by his family on Monday.

In an Instagram post, Drena De Niro, the mother of De Niro-Rodriguez, expressed her grief and referred to him as her “beautiful sweet angel” whom she loved immensely. She struggled to comprehend how to live without him but vowed to carry on and share the love and light that he brought into her life. She emphasized the deep love and appreciation that surrounded him, wishing that love alone could have saved him.

In a statement given to CBS News, Drena De Niro expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support her family has received during this time of overwhelming grief.

“It is with immeasurable shock and sadness that we bid farewell to our beloved son Leo,” she said.

Carlos Mare, De Niro-Rodriguez’s father and an artist, shared a black image on his Instagram pages and responded to De Niro’s post with heartfelt words. He acknowledged that words cannot fully capture the joy his son brought to their lives, but he believes that Leo is now a divine presence, shining a light that was hidden in the dark. Mare beautifully states, “You can’t spell LOVE without LEO.”

Robert De Niro expressed his deep distress over the loss of his beloved grandson Leo in a statement to CBS News. He thanked everyone for their condolences and kindly requested privacy for the family to mourn their loss.

Regarding De Niro-Rodriguez’s death, the New York City Police Department shared that they responded to a 911 call at a building in Lower Manhattan. An unconscious and unresponsive man was discovered and pronounced dead by emergency medical services. While the police initially stated the man’s age as 18, a family spokesperson confirmed that De Niro-Rodriguez was indeed 19.

The exact cause of death will be determined by the city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner, according to the police spokesperson.

De Niro-Rodriguez and his mother appeared in the movies “A Star Is Born” and “Cabaret Maxime” in 2018. He was also credited with an appearance in “The Collection” in 2005.
