1565 Landmark durch deutsche Touristen beschädigt

In yet another act of vandalism, the Vasari Corridor in Florence, Italy, has been defaced. The culprits, identified as two German men aged 20 and 21, were part of a group of 11 students, according to CNN. They spray-painted soccer-related graffiti on the columns of the corridor before being caught. The Airbnb where they were staying was raided, and evidence including black spray paint and paint-stained clothing was found. The police are comparing the fingerprints found on the paint cans to those of the students.

The Vasari Corridor is an aerial walkway that connects the Uffizi Galleries along the Arno River. It was built in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari, an Italian Renaissance painter and architect. Originally, it served as a secret route for the Medicis to travel between their family homes. The restoration of the corridor, which will cost over $10,000, will be carried out under the supervision of armed guards, as stated by Italy’s Culture Ministry. Florence Mayor Gennaro Sangiuliano described the defacement as a serious crime and emphasized that even the smallest scratch will be prosecuted from now on.

The director of the Uffizi, Eike Schmidt, condemned the crime as despicable and called for strong punishment instead of symbolic measures typically imposed on tourists to avoid extradition issues. Schmidt highlighted that similar crimes in the US can lead to a five-year prison sentence. The culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, agreed that such acts must not go unpunished and stated that justice takes its course. The graffiti on the corridor was related to a German soccer club from the third division, although it is unclear if anyone in the group is associated with that team. (It’s worth noting that the Colosseum was also defaced in June.)
