12 Children Injured by Baby Shark Toys

Approximately 7.5 million “Baby Shark” bath toys that sing and swim are being recalled due to reports of lacerations and puncture wounds in children. Zuru, a toymaker based in California, is taking back both the full-size and mini versions of their robotic baby shark toys that have hard plastic top fins, which pose a risk of injury. According to the AP, twelve injuries have already been reported in connection with Zuru’s full-sized Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing & Swim Bath Toys, with nine cases requiring stitches or medical attention. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a release on Thursday addressing this situation.

While injuries have only been reported with the full-sized toys, Zuru is also recalling the Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys as a precautionary measure. Anyone in possession of the recalled toys should immediately stop using them and contact Zuru for a full refund. To receive the refund, customers are instructed to cut off or bend the tail fin, write “recalled” and a registration code on the body of the baby shark, and upload a photo to a dedicated recall website.

The recalled products can be identified by their model numbers and date codes. Zuru’s Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing & Swim Bath Toys and Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys were sold in-person and online at various retailers, including Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, and TJX Companies, from May 2019 to March 2023. In its announcement, Zuru clarified that the recall only pertains to the versions of the baby shark toys with a hard plastic fin, and the newest toys with a silicone fin are not affected by the recall.
