11th Bus of Migrants from Texas Receives Warm Welcome in LA

Los Angeles received another bus carrying migrants from Texas on Wednesday. This marks the 11th arrival since June 14, as reported by the L.A. Welcomes Collective and the mayor’s office. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) confirmed the arrival of 35 asylum seekers from various countries. CHIRLA is a member of the collective, which consists of nonprofit organizations, faith groups, and city and county services that respond to the arrival of migrant buses.

The bus arrived at approximately 10:50 a.m. and carried 21 adults and 14 children between the ages of 2 and 17.

“In Los Angeles, 35 asylum seekers sent from Brownsville, Texas, on Wednesday were treated with compassion and dignity as they begin their journey to settle in our community,” CHIRLA posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). “The L.A. Welcomes Collective expresses appreciation to the city of Los Angeles, county, and community partners for their support.”

Zach Seidl, a spokesman for Mayor Karen Bass, confirmed the latest arrival in a statement.

“The city has been actively collaborating with city departments, the county, nonprofit organizations, faith partners, and other coalition members to implement a plan established earlier this year,” Seidl said. “When we became aware of the bus yesterday, we immediately put our plan into action.”

According to the mayor’s office, a total of 435 migrants from Texas have been welcomed in the city since the first bus arrived at Union Station in June.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been facilitating these trips under Operation Lone Star, citing an overwhelming influx of immigrants crossing the Mexican border in Texas’ border region. Operation Lone Star is a joint operation between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department along the southern border.

Abbott’s objective with this operation is to combat the influx of immigrants, illegal drug trade, and human smuggling. On X, Abbott shared that as of August 26, the operation has resulted in over 420,800 apprehensions, 33,600 criminal arrests, 30,500 felony charges, 436 million seized fentanyl doses, and transportation of 33,230 migrants to designated “Sanctuary Cities.”

Abbott added, “Texas is securing the border in President Biden’s absence.”

“Texas’ small border towns remain overwhelmed by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border,” Abbott stated after the first bus arrived in Los Angeles in June. “Los Angeles is a sought-after destination for migrants, especially now that it has declared itself a sanctuary city. Our border communities are on the front lines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide the necessary relief until he fulfills his duty to secure the border,” he concluded.

During an interview with KNX News, Mayor Karen Bass stated that if Governor Abbott’s concerns and actions were genuine, the government of Texas would notify and coordinate with them.

Unfortunately, that is not the case.

“We only find out about the buses when they are already en route. We have no information about who will be on the bus, the number of people, or their physical condition upon arrival,” Bass expressed. “Sometimes they haven’t even had sufficient food or water.”

The Los Angeles City Council passed a motion on June 9 to formally establish the city as a sanctuary city.

Furthermore, the L.A. City Council approved a motion on Wednesday morning, requesting an investigation by the City Attorney’s Office to determine if any crimes were committed on or before June 14 when Governor Abbott sent 42 migrants to Los Angeles in the initial shipments.
