118 New Emoji Set to Launch This Year: Includes Lime, Shaking Head, and Gender-Neutral Families

The eagerly anticipated list of new emoji candidates for approval by the Unicode Consortium in September has been revealed by Emojipedia. These 118 potential additions include a lime, shaking heads in both vertical and horizontal directions, and a phoenix bird. Additionally, there are four new gender-neutral family emoji represented by silhouettes. Emojipedia has showcased these new characters in sample designs on their blog, honoring World Emoji Day. Among the new faces expected to make an appearance are a horizontally-shaking head and a vertically-shaking head. Other potential additions include a phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom, and a broken chain. The designs also feature four gender-neutral families, representing different family sizes. Alongside these, there may also be directional versions of various person emoji, such as those walking, running, kneeling, using a white cane, and using manual and motorized wheelchairs. Emojipedia has highlighted the necessity for selecting specific orientations for emoji designs to effectively convey their intended concept, given their small size. While it remains uncertain whether these emoji will be included in the final version of Emoji 15.1, past trends suggest that the draft list is a good indication. Some platforms may introduce these new emoji within a few months, with the majority of updates expected during the first half of 2024.
