105 soccer fans detained by Greek authorities after clashes and fatal stabbing outside stadium

All 105 soccer fans suspected to have been involved in extensive clashes in the Greek capital, resulting in the death of a 29-year-old AEK Athens supporter, have been ordered to be detained pending their trial, as announced by authorities on Sunday.

To determine their involvement, three examining magistrates and two prosecutors interrogated the detained fans in batches over the course of three days, with 30 on Friday, 40 on Saturday, and 35 on Sunday. Each day, the authorities decided whether to detain them until trial. Additionally, one suspect, who is currently hospitalized under guard, provided a deposition to a visiting magistrate.

Regarding the incident, all 102 Croat citizens and 3 Greeks denied any culpability in the fatal stabbing of Michalis Katsouris. Katsouris succumbed to a stab wound, while 10 others were injured in the attack carried out by Croatian supporters brandishing wooden clubs and metal bats outside AEK’s Opap Arena last Monday. Consequently, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) canceled the Champions League qualifier between AEK and Dinamo Zagreb due to the violence.

Authorities will search cellphone signals at the sites of the clashes — AEK’s stadium and a metro station — to determine any further involvement. Prosecutors have charged the 105 fans with a total of 11 offenses, including felonies such as premeditated murder and membership in a criminal organization, as well as misdemeanors.

The suspects will be dispersed among various jails across the country. On Wednesday, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin will meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Subsequently, they will hold meetings with ministers, the head of Greece’s Football Federation, and the owners of the country’s four largest soccer clubs — AEK, Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, and PAOK Thessaloniki.

Coinciding with these events, the UEFA Super Cup final between Manchester City and Sevilla will take place at Olympiakos’ stadium near Piraeus on Wednesday.
