10-year-olds to receive lessons on anti-money laundering

With the aim of raising awareness about the risks of becoming a money mule, the banking trade body UK Finance and Cifas have collaborated to launch a campaign called “Don’t Be Fooled.” They have also developed lesson plans for schools, attracting over 16,000 primary (10-11) and secondary (11-14) students since May 2023.

One compelling case study involves a young boy named Josh who falls victim to a scheme where he unknowingly opens crypto accounts for a weekly payment of £500. Another example involves a character named Lauren, who is deceived by an online friend into assisting with money concealment.

In addition, parents are advised to be vigilant if they notice sudden increases in their children’s cash flow or if their children start purchasing expensive items like gaming systems or designer clothing. A letter provided to schools to share with parents urges families not to engage with anyone they suspect of being involved in money laundering.

Money mules unknowingly allow criminals to use their bank accounts to launder money generated through activities such as human trafficking, drug dealing, fraud, and even terrorism. These criminals often offer significant rewards to entice participants. It is essential to remember that allowing fraudsters to use your bank accounts for money laundering is illegal, and money mules can face up to 14 years in prison under money laundering legislation.

Ben Donaldson from UK Finance emphasizes the significance of protecting young people from criminals who exploit them and jeopardize their future.
