10 More Deaths Reported in Hawaii Alongside 935 New COVID-19 Cases

The Hawaii Department of Health has released its latest report on COVID-19 infections, revealing 935 new cases over the past week. This brings the state’s total number of cases since the pandemic’s onset to 385,774. Sadly, the report also highlights ten more fatalities, taking the state’s COVID death toll to 1,878.

The weekly average of new COVID-19 cases stands at 133 per day, down from 138 a day on April 12 of this year. Additionally, the state’s average positivity rate, at 7.9%, has seen a decrease from 9.2% reported on April 12. However, these numbers only represent a seven-day average based on data ranging from April 8 to 14. On the other hand, the week-over-week infection count takes into account data from April 11 to 17, but does not include the most recent three days due to possible reporting delays.

It’s essential to note that these statistics are estimated to be higher since home test kit results are not included. The number of cases per 100,000 individuals in the state remains relatively stable at 9.4, similar to the previous week’s figure of 9.7.

The data by island shows that most new cases were on Oahu, with 715 cases, followed by Hawaii island (92), Kauai (63), Maui (54), and two on Lanai, and one on Molokai. Moreover, eight infections were reported among Hawaii residents out of state.

Regarding the virus’s dominant subvariant, the Omicron XBB.1.5 circulates around Hawaii, making up approximately 84% of the total. Individuals who haven’t received the updated bivalent booster should make sure to get one, as recommended by the Hawaii Department of Health. The report highlights that to date, about 368,495 residents (around 27.4% of the eligible population) have received the updated bivalent booster.

Currently, there are 73 patients with COVID in hospitals, eight of which are in intensive care. The Healthcare Association of Hawaii has reported an increase in the weekly average of COVID patients in hospitals, up to 72 per day from 62 per day the previous week.
