10 Creative Ways to Foster a ‘Inky’ Environment for Effective Reading and Writing Instruction

Help Sacramento’s young readers succeed and thrive!

In a small reading table at F.C. Joyce Elementary School, fourth-grade student Khatirah Mohammadi slowly sounds out words in a storybook. She’s a recent immigrant from Afghanistan and, like many other young Sacramentans, is behind her age-group level on reading skills. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem, leaving many children struggling to catch up.

Khatirah’s story is just one of many, and that’s where 916 Ink’s Read On literacy tutoring program comes in. This nonprofit organization, in collaboration with The Sacramento Bee’s Book of Dreams program, is asking for your financial support this holiday season to help disadvantaged children improve their reading and writing skills.

The program provides reading interventions for first-through-fifth-graders who are falling behind. Volunteer tutors work with these students both online and on-campus, helping them develop crucial literacy skills. The goal is to create comfortable, supportive, and inspiring spaces on campus, equipped with reading libraries and educational materials to facilitate the students’ growth.

The requested donations will allow for the expansion of the program at two new schools in the Twin Rivers Unified School District and will directly benefit students like Khatirah. Their reading curriculum is evidence-based, and all tutors receive structured, ongoing training and support to ensure that the students receive the best possible help.

What’s more, the 916 Ink group plans to add their unique touch to these spaces, creating an environment that promotes literacy and inspires confidence. Donations made to the Book of Dreams program will directly contribute to transforming these areas at the new schools into vibrant, comfortable, and dynamic learning spaces.

Reading is the foundation for success in life, academics, and careers. If children don’t develop proficiency in reading early on, it can hinder their academic success and potential future opportunities. Your support will allow 916 Ink to continue making a positive impact on the lives of these young readers, instilling in them the confidence and skills they need to succeed.

By donating to the Book of Dreams program, not only are you helping children improve their literacy skills, but you’re also contributing to the growth and prosperity of the community at large. Every dollar counts, and together, we can help children like Khatirah thrive and become future contributors to society.

Please consider making a donation to The Sacramento Bee’s Book of Dreams program this holiday season. Let’s ensure that Sacramento’s young readers have the necessary tools and support to succeed and thrive.
