Actress Lily Gladstone expressed her dissatisfaction with the Western drama “Yellowstone” and its romanticized depiction of America in a recent interview with Vulture, labeling the controversial show as “Deplorable.”
However, Gladstone, who stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the film “Killers of the Flower Moon,” made it clear that she does not hold Native actors accountable for their involvement in the show.
“No offense to the Native talent in that,” Gladstone told Vulture. “I auditioned several times. That’s what we had.”
Gladstone, who identifies as Blackfeet and Nez Perce, stands as one of the few Native actors representing Native Americans on screen in the US. Throughout her career, she has been outspoken on issues impacting Native Americans in the media.
“Yellowstone,” helmed by Taylor Sheridan, reigns as the top-rated entertainment show in the US. However, the series has faced controversies. It has been criticized for its portrayal of Native spirituality and lack of diversity among its cast members.
Sheridan has also refuted claims that the show aimed to appeal to conservative values.
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” scheduled for release on October 20, depicts the true story of serial killings committed against the Osage Nation by white men driven by greed.
Gladstone assured Vulture that the movie, made in consultation with the Osage Nation, does not follow the white-savior narrative.
“It’s not a white-savior story,” Gladstone emphasized to Vulture. “It’s the Osage saying, ‘Do something. Here’s money. Come help us.'”
