The United States women’s national team faces uncertainty as they pursue a third consecutive Women’s World Cup. This is unfamiliar territory for the team, as they have never been in this position before.
After a 0-0 draw against Portugal, the Americans face a difficult challenge against Sweden, who topped their group without a single loss. While the U.S. soundly defeated Vietnam, their ties against the Netherlands and Portugal brought criticism.
The U.S. has always finished at least in third place in previous World Cups. The last time they finished third was in 2007, with Abby Wambach and Hope Solo making significant contributions to the team.

Lindsey Horan downplayed the criticism and referred to it as “noise.”
“Again, it’s noise and, again, it’s an opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We know that’s how it goes,” said Horan. “I always want to defend my team and say, ‘You have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes, you have no idea every single training what we’re doing individually, collectively, etc.”
Unfortunately, the U.S. will be without Rose Lavelle, an important player from their previous Women’s World Cup run, as she received her second yellow card and is suspended for the game against Sweden.
The U.S. last faced Sweden at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, resulting in a 3-0 win for Sweden. However, in 2019, the U.S. won a friendly match against Sweden with a score of 3-2. The U.S. also defeated Sweden during the group stage of the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
