In Verdigris, Oklahoma, a tragic incident unfolded on Thursday evening as a woman and her three children were discovered dead in their home. Authorities suspect that this may be a murder-suicide following an extended standoff. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
The standoff began when a police officer driving along the street noticed fireworks emanating from the garage of a house in Verdigris. Sensing that something was amiss, the officer investigated and called for backup. According to Hunter McKee, spokesperson for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the officer found a woman and two children locked inside the garage, where they had been placed by an armed woman who had taken another child for a supervised visit. The house was surrounded by multiple agencies, including a SWAT team from the Cherokee Nation.
After three hours of no response from inside the house, officers made the decision to enter. To their horror, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the adult woman and the three children, all of whom had suffered gunshot wounds. The ages of the children range from several months to approximately 11 years old. A handgun was found at the scene, leading authorities to believe that this was a murder-suicide.
According to Police Chief Jack Shackleford, the officers had previously visited the home on several occasions in response to domestic and mental health calls. The nature of the relationship between the two women involved in the incident remains unknown at this time.
