Woman Abandons Pet at Airport After Being Informed that a Crate is Required for Air Travel

  • A woman in Pittsburgh left her emotional support dog at the airport.
  • She claimed the dog was her emotional support animal and didn’t have a crate.
  • When she couldn’t fly with the dog, she abandoned it in a parking lot.

A woman attempted to fly to a resort with her French Bulldog but ended up abandoning it in a parking lot after being denied permission by airport staff, according to officials.

The dog was discovered unattended in a stroller at Pittsburgh International Airport on Friday morning at 5.30 a.m., as tweeted by the Allegheny County Police Department.

The passenger was informed that she needed a crate for her dog to fly with it. However, she left the dog near short-term parking and boarded her flight, the police reported.

Although a microchip was found on the dog, the owner could not be contacted, added the department.

Sgt. Jason Donaldson told ABC affiliate WTAE-TV that the woman was flying to a resort and claimed her dog was an emotional support animal. However, airline officials were unconvinced.

The 7-year-old dog is in good health and is currently being cared for by a local animal shelter, Sgt. Donaldson mentioned.

No information was provided regarding the woman’s destination or flight details.

The state dog warden is expected to press charges against the dog’s owner. According to Pennsylvania law, it is illegal to abandon a dog, and offenders can face fines up to $1,000.

The Allegheny County Police Department did not respond to a comment request from Insider outside of regular business hours.
