Witnessing the Loss of a Fallen Hero in DC, Unforeseen After My Service alongside Them in Afghanistan

Imagine risking everything to assist American forces in defending your country against lawless violence, only to escape to the freest nation in the world and be tragically gunned down on its lawless and violent streets. This is the heartbreaking story of Nasratullah Ahmad Yar, a 31-year-old Afghan Lyft driver and former interpreter for the United States military in Afghanistan, who was recently murdered in Washington, D.C.

This anecdote serves as a disgraceful reflection on the state of lawlessness in America and our deviation from the principles that have made this nation a haven for refuge and prosperity.

As a Force Recon Marine and DOD contractor on a JSOC Task Force, I completed eight deployments to Afghanistan and fought alongside interpreters like Nasrat in the face of Taliban violence. I witnessed their selflessness and unwavering commitment to freedom and safety, as well as their extraordinary personal sacrifices.

Due to these experiences, I have gained a unique perspective on the extent of Nasrat’s sacrifices.

I recall a moment when Aziz, a dear friend and a fellow interpreter like Nasrat, risked everything to defend his own country and protect me in the process. Assigned with the task of eliminating a high-value target, Aziz and I found ourselves being pursued by over two dozen heavily armed Taliban fighters in hi-lux trucks as we fled a small town. When we reached a wide-open field, we realized our only option was to turn and fight.

As Aziz and I took turns providing cover fire while the other escaped, we bounded away from the enemy fighters and their hindered trucks in the muddy terrain. In that intense moment, Aziz saw something I didn’t – a man with an RPG ready to launch directly at me as I laid down suppressive fire. Instead of continuing his escape, Aziz turned back to eliminate the threat, risking his own life to save mine. This act mirrored the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by Nasrat.

Despite all of that, Aziz and many others were abandoned by their American allies, or at least by our commander in chief, during the devastating surrender of Afghanistan to the Taliban and our global foes.

In response to the gaps left by the withdrawal, I assembled an elite team to rescue Aziz and countless others from being left behind to face the Taliban. This mission ultimately led to the rescue of over 17,000 Americans, vulnerable civilians, and Afghan allies who would have otherwise been subject to Taliban brutality. These allies, like Aziz and Nasrat, had worked alongside American special forces for years before seeking refuge in America after the Taliban took over.

In recent years, I have continued to support Special Immigration Visa holders like Aziz and Nasrat through my Mighty Oaks Foundation, which offers programs to help our allies transition into American life after their service. Once again, my team is stepping in to provide support where the government has failed to do so.

After dedicating himself to protecting Afghanistan from lawlessness and violence, Nasrat surely felt a sense of relief when he arrived in America. It is tragic that his life was cut short on the streets of our nation’s capital, which has itself fallen victim to the very lawlessness and violence that Nasrat had fought to eradicate in his own country.

Gun violence in D.C. is alarmingly prevalent, with a 20% increase in homicides and a 30% increase in overall violent crime this year. Carjackings, which have been steadily rising for five years, are up by almost 50% and posed a significant threat to Nasrat, who worked as a Lyft driver to support his wife and four children as they began their new life in the “land of the free.” Shockingly, certain areas of our major cities are even deadlier than the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a recent study.

Despite the visible deterioration of our nation’s capital and other major cities in America, the culture of lawlessness continues to thrive. Prosecutors and politicians embrace lenient policies towards crime and refuse to acknowledge the damage they are causing. Even iconic landmarks like Union Station have been allowed to degrade into perilous drug dens.

Instead of prioritizing safety and prosperity, politicians prioritize power and personal agendas. They seek to restrict our Second Amendment rights, leaving us unable to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the very threat they have allowed to grow through their negligence of the underlying causes of lawless violence.

Americans are appalled as violent career criminals are glorified as victims of inequality, while law-abiding citizens are demonized and scapegoated. Real solutions to societal problems are overshadowed by political posturing that may win votes but ultimately fails the American people, especially those residing in our inner cities.

We are capable of better. I have devoted my life to guarding and preserving the qualities that make America the greatest, freest, and most prosperous nation on earth. Men like Aziz and Nasrat have dedicated their lives to bringing what they believed to be American freedom and greatness to Afghanistan.

As the leader of the free world, America carries the responsibility of upholding the values and principles that form the foundation of our greatness. I pray that the American people are willing to raise their voices and fight as hard as Aziz and Nasrat did to safeguard these values and principles for future generations.
