Witness the Surprising Transformation: Unlocking a Delightful World for My Son Beyond Lockdown

Covid Couldn’t Stop a Unique Friendship

In the midst of the global pandemic, there was still room for hope. Despite the disappointment of his flatmates not showing up, Owen held on to his optimism. Five flatmates were supposed to be arriving, but only one, a six-foot-six gentle giant named Nikhil from India, made it.

Owen and Nikhil became fast friends, and their bond only grew stronger with time. They moved into their new flat on Trinity campus and looked forward to their final year of learning in Dublin. Despite the uncertainty of the future, their friendship remained steadfast.

Many miles away in Connecticut, Owen’s mother Kathleen Simmons witnessed the unwavering friendship between her son and Nikhil during their Facetime calls. She realized that their friendship was stronger than any epidemic.

Token Gestures Won’t Improve Road Safety

The recent response of the government to the increasing number of road accidents suggests that they see speed limits as part of the problem. However, no evidence has been presented to support this claim.

Most drivers already adhere to the speed limits. An event called “Go Slow” even caught over 800 drivers exceeding unimaginable speeds. Will these drivers suddenly slow down just because the limits are changed? It’s highly unlikely.

Implementing a 30km/h limit may also have unintended consequences for cyclists. Racing cyclists regularly exceed this speed, so will they be penalized for doing so?

The only effective solution is to have a highly visible presence of law enforcement, such as the police and speed cameras, rather than occasional token gestures. This will serve as a true deterrent and improve road safety.

Tackling the Root Causes of Road Accidents

Is speed the sole cause of road accidents? Perhaps we should also focus on improving the quality of our highways to reduce the number of accidents.

We need to invest in resurfacing roads, fixing potholes, trimming hedges, addressing visibility issues, addressing water lodgments, and widening roads. Additionally, increasing the presence of law enforcement would serve as a major deterrent.

While reducing speed limits may seem like a solution, the real problem lies in the overall condition of our roads. Let’s address the root causes and make our highways safer for everyone.

Enforcing Speed Limits in Rural Areas

The recent announcement of proposed speed limit reductions is welcome news, but the real challenge lies in enforcing these limits. In rural areas like Kilkenny, there is rarely a visible presence of law enforcement officers or speed vans.

We can’t blame the police for this situation. They simply don’t have enough members to adequately cover all areas. If we want to make a real impact on road safety, we need to allocate more resources to law enforcement in rural areas.

Reducing speed limits alone won’t make a difference. It’s the enforcement of these limits that will truly improve road safety and save lives.

Holding Reckless Cyclists Accountable

As a pedestrian walking on the footpaths of my hometown, I am frequently startled by cyclists who pass by in a dangerous manner. It’s high time we hold these reckless riders accountable for their actions.

I would like to see more of these cyclists appear in court and explain why they choose to endanger pedestrians. It’s not enough to just reduce speed limits; we need stricter enforcement and consequences for those who break the rules.

Reducing road accidents requires both effective enforcement and personal responsibility. Let’s prioritize the safety of all road users.

Gambling Bill Strikes a Balance

I am thrilled to see Sharon Byrne, chair of the Irish Bookmakers Association, welcoming the Gambling Regulation Bill 2022 (Business section, September 3). With a significant percentage of 16-year-olds in Ireland engaging in gambling and struggling to control their habits, regulation is crucial.

It’s important to address some common misconceptions about the bill. It does not aim to prevent the broadcast of sports events or eliminate gambling-related logos. Instead, it empowers the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland to take action against inducements that may contribute to problem gambling.

The bill also includes an exclusion register, providing individuals with the opportunity to distance themselves from gambling while still allowing them to choose the extent to which they exclude themselves from betting activities.

After extensive engagement with industry experts and those affected by problem gambling, I believe this bill strikes the right balance. It enables people to continue enjoying gambling responsibly while introducing safeguards for those at risk of addiction.

Challenging the Myths Surrounding Gambling Regulation

Sharon Byrne’s recent article contains several myths about gambling regulation that need to be addressed. It’s important to recognize that most harm experienced by gamblers and their loved ones comes from interactions with licensed gambling operators.

The gambling industry often uses the “black market” as a scapegoat to downplay the need for regulation. We must not let these myths undermine the importance of effective gambling regulation and the protection it provides for vulnerable individuals.

As an addiction counselor, I have witnessed firsthand the damage caused by unregulated gambling. The Gambling Regulation Bill 2022 is a step in the right direction to address this issue and protect those most at risk.

Preserving a Local Amenity

Castletown House and Estate hold significant value as a local and national amenity. However, during the lockdowns, a private developer purchased land behind Castletown House, resulting in the closure of traditional nature walks and footpaths near the house. Local objections have been ignored so far.

Kildare County Council and the Office of Public Works claim they were outbid by the developer, who has been vague about their plans for the site. Castletown Estate is the only amenity in Celbridge, and it provides a perfect natural space for people of all ages to enjoy. As we become more aware of the importance of preserving our natural habitats, it’s crucial to save Castletown from further destruction.

We urge authorities to intervene and protect this valuable local amenity for the benefit of current and future generations.

A Plea for Less Advertisements

I couldn’t help but notice the numerous advertisements that dominate the pages of the Sunday Independent. Out of the 146 pages in the newspaper, a significant portion is dedicated to ads, which raises the question of whether readers should pay a high price for a paper filled with advertisements.

While it’s understandable that newspapers rely on advertising revenue, it’s disheartening to see less space dedicated to the reports and articles produced by your talented journalists. Perhaps it’s time to reconsider the balance between ads and quality content to maintain reader satisfaction.

This letter represents the frustration of many readers who value substance over advertisements when it comes to their newspaper reading experience.

Wearing Caps in Restaurants

I agree with the reader who expressed their thoughts on men wearing caps and hats in restaurants (Letters, September 3). According to traditional etiquette, it is considered inappropriate.

However, I would like to offer a different perspective. I personally wear a cap in restaurants due to sun damage on my head. As a result of excessive sun exposure over the years, my scalp has been damaged, and I choose to wear a cap to spare others from the unsightly sight.

Sun protection is crucial, so I encourage everyone to wear a cap or hat when out in the sun. By doing so, we can prevent skin damage and avoid potential awkward situations in nice restaurants later in life.
