Wine Selection for the Perfect Bank Holiday Destinations

The bank holiday trip to the seaside is a long-standing British tradition that includes indulging in fish and chips. However, this tradition is under threat as Sarson’s, a prominent supplier of chippy vinegar, predicts that half of the UK’s fish and chip shops could shut down by 2025 due to rising ingredient and energy costs. In an effort to support this dying art, I will be doing my part by enjoying fish and chips this holiday. For the perfect accompaniment, I recommend Tesco’s classic white wine from Spain’s Atlantic coast, which offers a delightful mix of salty citrus and white peach flavors.

Another beloved bank holiday tradition is having a picnic. The choice of wine for a picnic is influenced not only by its contents but also by practicality. Fortunately, the range and quality of wines available in alternative packaging, such as 25cl cans, have significantly improved in recent years. One standout option is IGO Organic Red, a juicy and berry-scented garnacha that perfectly complements any picnic.

Domaine de la Mordorée La Reine des Bois Tavel Rosé, France 2022 (£30.50,

Whether it’s rain or shine, the quintessential bank holiday activity is a barbecue. Pairing wines with barbecue dishes requires robust flavors and textures that can complement smoky grilled flavors, as well as punchy dressings and sauces. For white wine lovers, Australian Rieslings with their steely acidity and tangy lime notes, like Jim Barry Lodge Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2022, are excellent choices, especially with seafood or halloumi. If you prefer reds, southern Italian reds such as Il Brutto Negroamaro Primitivo 2021 from Salento in Puglia, known for their plummy fruit sweetness and cherryish acidity, are a great match for charred red meat or aubergine. Lastly, if you’re looking for a versatile wine, opt for a darker and more intense rosé like Domaine de la Mordorée’s exemplary offering from the southern Rhône Valley.
