Win Big with the $785 Million Powerball Jackpot in Monday’s Drawing

The Powerball drawing on Monday offers the chance to win the ninth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

For the 28th consecutive drawing on Saturday, there were no tickets sold with all six numbers, resulting in a staggering $785 million jackpot. This makes it the fourth-largest in the game’s history since it began in 1992 and the ninth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

Since July 19, there has been no ticket sold with all six numbers, except for one lucky winner who purchased a ticket worth $1.08 billion at a downtown Los Angeles mini-market.

Ticket sales will end at 7 p.m. on Monday, and the drawing will take place at 7:59 p.m.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number are 1 in 292.2 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The overall chance of winning any prize is 1 in 24.9.

Contrary to popular belief, purchasing tickets from stores that have sold large jackpots in the past does not increase the chances of winning, as stated by USC mathematics professor Ken Alexander.

“The probability of a given place selling a winning lottery ticket is simply related to the number of tickets they sell,” Alexander told City News Service.

However, players who want a better chance of avoiding sharing the jackpot should consider choosing numbers that are less frequently selected. Many lottery players often choose numbers based on their birthdays, so selecting numbers higher than 31 could be advantageous, according to Alexander.

In Saturday’s drawing, a ticket with five numbers (excluding the Powerball number) was sold at a liquor store in Burbank and is now worth $5,422,749.

In other states, tickets with five numbers (excluding the Powerball number) are worth either $1 million or $2 million. However, California law requires major lottery payouts to be calculated on a pari-mutuel basis, which can exceed or fall below $1 million.

According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, three other tickets were sold with five numbers (excluding the Powerball number). The ticket sold in Michigan is worth $2 million because the player chose the Power Play option, whereby a ticket with five numbers is worth $2 million for an additional $1 per play.

The tickets sold in Florida and New York are each worth $1 million.

The winning numbers from Saturday’s drawing were 1, 12, 20, 33, 66, with the Powerball number being 21. The estimated jackpot was $748 million, making it the seventh-largest in Powerball history and the 12th largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

The Powerball game is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
