In the world of technology, it often feels like we’re always getting it wrong. There’s so much conflicting advice out there, and what works for one person may not work for another. In a recent live online chat, I had the opportunity to address some of your burning technology questions. Topics covered include the use of VPNs, the best ways to store digital photos, and the effectiveness of identity theft-monitoring services. Here are some of the edited highlights.

Q: Should I use a VPN? What are the top five options?

A: Personally, I don’t use a VPN. While VPNs can be used to enhance digital security and privacy, most security experts advise against using them, especially if you’re based in the United States. By using a VPN, you’re essentially giving the VPN provider full access to your online activities. Many VPN companies have questionable practices, and the actual security offered by VPNs is often exaggerated. If you’re concerned about your digital security, there are better steps you can take, such as using unique passwords for all your online accounts and enabling two-factor authentication. Additionally, if you want to research sensitive topics without leaving traces, you could consider using privacy-focused web browsers like Brave or search engines like DuckDuckGo. For trusted VPN options, refer to my colleague Geoffrey A. Fowler’s column.

Q: What’s the best way to store digital photos?

A: There isn’t a perfect solution, but here’s a general rule of thumb. If you have an iPhone, the simplest option is to use Apple’s iCloud, although you may have to pay for it. For Android users, Google Photos is the easiest way to store digital photos, and it offers more generous free storage options. However, it can be a hassle to switch from these cloud services if you decide to do so in the future. That said, there are alternatives available. Microsoft’s OneDrive works across various devices, and Amazon Prime subscribers have access to unlimited photo storage. Another option is SmugMug, a non-Big Tech subscription service. Some people prefer to skip the cloud entirely and store photos on their personal hard drives.

Q: Is it worth investing in identity theft protection services?

A: Identity theft protection services claim to monitor the web and alert you if your personal information is stolen or misused. They may even offer reimbursement if you suffer financial loss. However, according to consumer finance experts, these services are generally not worth the money. Instead, assume that your personal information will be compromised at some point. In such cases, the best course of action is to be vigilant. Stay alert for signs of identity theft, such as unusual bills or notifications about unfamiliar activity. Change passwords for your important accounts, and consider freezing your credit to prevent criminals from using your information for fraudulent purposes. Freezing your credit can be done for free, and you can find instructions on Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion websites or through AnnualCreditReport.com.

In other news, have you tried the Google Lens feature on your phone? It’s a fantastic tool for translating documents, menus, and signs into your preferred language. If you have an Android phone, you can find the Google Lens app separately. On iPhones, Lens is available within the Google app. All you have to do is point your phone at the foreign text, and it will automatically translate it for you. While it’s not perfect, it works well for short documents or when traveling. It’s like a sprinkle of magic!
