Why the Third Vote in Jordan Could Spell Trouble and What You Need to Know

Predictions surrounding the second House vote for electing a speaker were proven correct, as Jim Jordan’s chances seem to be dwindling. According to NBC News, Jordan, who failed to secure victory in Wednesday’s vote, announced that Republicans plan to hold the next vote at noon on Thursday and have made it clear that they will persistently continue “until we get a speaker.” In order to attain the majority of 217 votes, Jordan can only afford to lose four GOP votes. However, on Tuesday, 20 Republicans voted for a different candidate, which increased to 22 on Wednesday, despite two lawmakers switching their votes from opposing him on Tuesday.

Representative Mario Diaz-Balart, who has consistently supported House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, stated that he will never lend his support to Jordan, predicting that a larger portion of the conference will vote against him in the third round. Representative Don Bacon, a supporter of ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, recommended that Jordan withdraw from the race, as he currently lacks the necessary support of 217 votes. Meanwhile, Representative Steve Womack, another opponent of Jordan, anticipated that the third vote would be the deciding factor, as mentioned in Politico.

The Washington Post reports that some of Jordan’s opponents claimed to have faced pressure from Jordan and his allies to change their vote, which only solidified their determination to oppose him. Representative Kay Granger boldly stated, “Intimidation and threats will not change my position.” Additionally, there have been discussions among lawmakers about amplifying the powers of Representative Patrick McHenry, the interim speaker. Former GOP Speakers Newt Gingrich and John Boehner expressed support for this idea on Wednesday, as reported by the AP. (Read more speaker of the House stories.)
