It may seem counterintuitive, but the actions of the Israeli government in the past have inadvertently strengthened Hamas and could potentially lead to a wider conflict in the region. The Israeli government originally supported a charity known as Mujama al-Islamiya, providing it with recognition and financial aid. However, this charity eventually transformed into Hamas, a group that is now viewed as a threat by Israel due to its leftist and progressive ideology. In 2006, when Hamas won elections in Gaza, it drove out the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) during a civil war. This divide and conquer tactic has now backfired and poses a significant challenge for Israel. The Irish Government must openly condemn Israel’s forced displacement and call for a ceasefire and negotiations to address the root cause of the violence. By doing so, they can help prevent further escalation of the conflict.
