National Learning Network and Bray Institute of Further Education
Stuart Brierton discovered the National Learning Network (NLN) during his Leaving Cert. Along with his classmates, he embarked on a week-long placement at NLN’s center in Bray, Co Wicklow.
Stuart, who attended New Court Special School in Bray, felt that traditional university might not be the best fit for him. He saw NLN as a more suitable option.
While Stuart enjoyed school and had a passion for English and history, he faced challenges when it came to mathematics.
NLN proved to be a valuable next step for Stuart after completing his Leaving Cert.
Over the course of two years, Stuart focused on practical skills such as typing, independent living, and job interview preparation at NLN.
According to Stuart, “NLN offers individuals the extra time and support they need to feel ready to pursue their goals, whether it’s attending university, further education, or securing employment. I’ve become more independent and socially active as a result.”
During his time at NLN, Stuart explored various further education options and ultimately enrolled in the Level 5 security studies course at the Bray Institute of Further Education (BIFE).
Stuart reflects, “The course went very well.”
Graduating during the Covid pandemic posed challenges in finding work, but Stuart’s NLN tutor, Shay Hiney, continued to support him by securing a volunteer position for him at Bray Wanderers FC, where he shadowed a security officer.
As the situation improved post-Covid, so did Stuart’s career. He is now employed in security work at the European Foundation in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, and describes it as “a fantastic place to work.”
Stuart expresses his gratitude, saying, “I am very happy with what I have achieved. I would give credit to NLN, particularly my tutors, Brian Gorman and Shay Hiney. Without them, I would not be where I am today.”
