Why Americans are Excessively Relying on Laxatives: The Impact of Hybrid Work and Post-Pandemic Travel

  • According to the Wall Street Journal, there is a nation-wide shortage of laxatives.
  • The demand for laxatives has increased due to hybrid work and travel, which can lead to constipation.
  • While laxatives can alleviate constipation, a gastroenterologist recommends increasing fiber intake as a first step.

The nation-wide laxative shortage has left the laxative aisle empty as people worry about their next bowel movement.

According to the Wall Street Journal, laxative demand is on the rise. This shortage can be attributed to various factors, including the aging American population, inadequate fiber intake among Americans, and the promotion of laxatives for weight loss on platforms like TikTok. Constipation resulting from hybrid work and travel may also contribute to the high demand.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Wendi LeBrett, known as @socalgastrodoc on TikTok, suggests that while laxatives can effectively alleviate constipation, it’s better to increase fiber consumption as a first step for adults struggling with their bowel movements.

How Hybrid Work and Travel Affect Bathroom Routines

Hybrid work and travel can disrupt our regular routines, leading to changes in bowel movements, as reported by the WSJ.

As explained by Dr. LeBrett in one of her TikTok videos, our digestive systems prefer consistency. Any variations in our daily routines, such as different foods, meal times, sleep schedules, or even using an unfamiliar toilet, can cause stress and disrupt the digestive tract, resulting in constipation or diarrhea.

Dr. LeBrett shared her personal experience, stating that working from home makes it harder for her to maintain a healthy diet due to the abundance of tempting snacks. Additionally, the decrease in physical activity associated with working from home can also contribute to constipation.

Increasing Fiber Intake as a First Step

While the nation relies on laxatives for relief, Dr. LeBrett advises against using laxatives as the initial solution. Instead, she recommends incorporating more fiber into the diet, with a particular focus on psyllium husk, an old-fashioned supplement.

“I typically recommend starting with psyllium as my first-line treatment,” says Dr. LeBrett.

In addition, Dr. LeBrett suggests adding more fruits and vegetables to the diet. She often recommends kiwi, which has shown benefits for constipation and bloating, as well as other high-fiber foods like mango and dragonfruit.

However, it’s important to note that adding fiber to the diet won’t provide immediate relief from constipation. Dr. LeBrett advises patients to have patience, as it usually takes a few days to experience the effects.

If considering psyllium husk, starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it is recommended to prevent any gastrointestinal side effects like bloating.

When Fiber Isn’t Enough, Consider MiraLAX

If increasing fiber intake doesn’t help, Dr. LeBrett suggests trying a laxative like MiraLAX.

MiraLAX is an osmotic laxative that draws more water into the stool, making it easier to pass. According to Dr. LeBrett, osmotic laxatives like MiraLAX are safe for long-term use.

However, she advises against stimulant laxatives such as senna and Dulcolax, which induce bowel movements by stimulating intestinal muscles.

“Stimulant laxatives are fine occasionally, but relying on them regularly is not recommended,” says Dr. LeBrett. Long-term use of stimulant laxatives can negatively impact gut motility.

Chronic constipation may indicate underlying health conditions such as bowel obstruction, colon narrowing, or cancer. If experiencing persistent constipation, it is advisable to consult with a doctor to rule out any serious concerns.
