Whoopi Goldberg Provides Reassurance to Conservatives: ‘Barbie’ Does Not Contain Any Sexual Content

  • Whoopi Goldberg responded to conservative criticism of the “Barbie” film, saying she thought they would be happy “there’s no sex involved.”
  • Goldberg made her comments on the talk show “The View” while addressing the outcry from conservatives online.
  • “It’s just a movie about a doll, guys. I’m surprised that this is what’s bothering you nowadays,” Goldberg stated.

Whoopi Goldberg expressed her surprise at the conservative backlash against the “Barbie” film, stating that conservatives should be happy that “there’s no sex involved.”

During an episode of the talk show “The View,” Goldberg defended the Greta Gerwig film against criticisms from conservative figures such as Sen. Ted Cruz and Ben Shapiro.

“It’s just a movie! It’s about a doll! I thought you would all be pleased. There’s no sexual content because the doll doesn’t have genitalia,” Goldberg exclaimed on the show.

Cruz had previously labeled the film as “Chinese communist propaganda,” citing its depiction of a disputed region in the South China Sea. Shapiro, on the other hand, went as far as setting a Barbie doll on fire to protest the film’s perceived “wokeness.”

Goldberg emphasized that children perceive the film differently from adults, seeing it solely as a movie about the iconic doll.

“Kids don’t have the same life experiences as adults, so they won’t interpret the movie in the same way,” the 67-year-old actress explained. “To them, it’s just a ‘Barbie’ movie.”

Goldberg then challenged conservative viewers to justify to their children why they can’t watch the film.

“I want you to explain to your daughters why you won’t take them to see the ‘Barbie’ movie. I want you to tell them what’s wrong with Barbie,” Goldberg provocatively stated.

In a quirky gesture, Goldberg showed off her white platform boots adorned with decapitated Barbie doll heads.

“Now, let me tell you, I love my Barbie. It’s just a movie, guys. I’m surprised that this is what’s causing such a fuss these days,” she added.

Goldberg’s conservative co-host, Alyssa Farah Griffin, criticized the reactions as evidence of right-wing social media influencers being “out of touch” with actual Republicans.

“I find it fascinating how some of these right-wing men are so concerned about masculinity. Somehow, they think the ‘Barbie’ movie threatens their masculinity,” Griffin remarked. “But, in my opinion, caring so much about it is actually the most emasculating thing.”

The “Barbie” film is rated PG-13. Common Sense Media, a website that recommends appropriate movie ages for children, suggests a minimum age of 11. The site mentioned that while there is no explicit sexual content, the male dolls are shown shirtless and the female dolls face catcalling.

The film review on Common Sense Media also highlights suggestive references to the dolls’ bodies and societal expectations placed on women. Additionally, it mentions scenes of alcohol consumption, fights, playful weapon use, and chase scenes.

Common Sense Media commends the film for its diversity, noting the inclusion of Barbies and Kens of different body sizes, disabilities, genders, and racial and ethnic backgrounds in Barbieland.
