WhatsApp is set to launch a new feature called “Channels”, allowing users to follow accounts and receive updates. By using a central directory, users can search for channels within the app and subscribe to accounts. The feature does not require a phone number, and messages will disappear after 30 days. While channels will not be protected by end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp still prioritizes private messaging. The app may see new pressure if accounts with large followings post illegal or inflammatory content. The channels feature will bring WhatsApp closer to other social media apps and may be a source of revenue with the possibility of promotional charges. Rival apps like Telegram have long utilized a similar channels feature that’s especially popular in Eastern Europe and India. Instagram is also developing a Twitter rival with live posts and replies in a feed. However, WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart has warned that the app could be shut down in the UK if incoming online safety laws require them to break their encryption protocols.
